Companies are continuing to make significant investments in GIS technology. To assist in improving GIS data, Opvantek has developed and refined an innovative GIS Placement toolkit. Optimain GPS, the GIS Placement Suite, is designed to automatically geocode and place in the GIS various work orders and events (i.e., leaks, pipe condition reports, 3rd party strikes, one call tickets, etc) sent from external systems, and allow for manual placements, re-positioning, or adjustments as new or updated information is received.
GIS Placement Service
The GIS Placement Service provides a standard web service to which external applications (such as a work management system) can send new or modified objects or event records for placement on the correct GIS facility. The GIS Placement Service uses the same underlying engine and configuration as the GIS Placement Tool, and is designed for deployment in a Service Oriented Architecture. It provides an on going mechanism for placing leak and other object or event locations on the GIS map at points that closely approximate their real-world location, as well as association, to the extent possible, with the actual asset on which the event occurred. The GIS Placement Service can also be extended to geocode and place other types of data (leak or non-leak work request, damage record, one-call ticket, etc.) into the GIS, with rules for specific object type to create. It can also update the location of existing objects based on current information (new address, GPS coordinates, pipe attributes captured in a leak repair, etc).
GIS Placement Tool
The Optimain GIS Placement Tool provides a graphical user interface with which users can interact to efficiently find candidate locations and candidate facilities for an object or event to be placed, and easily place it on the best matching facility. The GIS Placement Tool provides a convenient, user-friendly approach for exception-based quality control of records that are initially placed automatically via the GIS Placement Service.
Geocoding and Pipe Association Service for Historical Records
Operators who want to jump-start their GIS enhancement efforts may want to consider Opvantek’s one-time service to place and associate historic records. Opvantek makes every practical effort to geocode historical customer work (i.e., leaks, pipe condition, services) and event records, and then attach them to the correct gas main segment or service tap in the GIS, based on the attributes of the work record compared to the location and attributes of the gas main segments or service tap in the GIS data model. This also includes generating location geometry for each record.
